Anti-Terrorism Day: Honoring courage, rejecting violence

Every year on 21 May, India observes Anti-Terrorism Day to spread awareness against terrorism, violence and extremism. The day commemorates the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, a tragic incident that reminded the nation how destructive terrorism can be for democracy, humanity and national unity. Across the country, schools, colleges and institutions organize awareness programs and pledge ceremonies to encourage peace and harmony. While Anti-Terrorism Day holds importance for every Indian citizen, its meaning becomes especially emotional and significant in Jammu & Kashmir, a region that has suffered the painful consequences of terrorism for decades.

Known across the world for its breathtaking mountains, serene lakes, beautiful gardens and rich cultural heritage, Kashmir has long been called “Paradise on Earth.” However, behind its natural beauty lies a painful history shaped by violence, fear and instability caused by terrorism. For decades, the people of Jammu & Kashmir have witnessed how terrorism destroys not only lives but also dreams, opportunities and social peace. The greatest victims of terrorism have never been governments or political institutions alone; they have been ordinary people students, shopkeepers, teachers, labourers, tourists and families who simply wish to live peacefully.

Terrorism in Kashmir has deeply affected everyday life. There have been periods when fear and uncertainty became part of normal existence. Families worried constantly about the safety of their loved ones, children grew up hearing disturbing stories of violence and many people experienced emotional stress because of instability around them. Terrorism creates an atmosphere where trust weakens and fear spreads silently through society. Even when violence occurs far away, its psychological impact reaches thousands of homes. The emotional scars left by terrorism often remain long after the incidents themselves are over.

One of the sectors most affected by terrorism in Kashmir has been education. Students in the Valley have faced numerous disruptions over the years due to unrest and instability. Schools and colleges have sometimes remained closed for long periods, affecting academic progress and creating uncertainty about the future. Many young students preparing for competitive examinations struggled because their studies were interrupted repeatedly. Yet despite these hardships, the youth of Kashmir have shown extraordinary resilience. Thousands of students continue to pursue higher education, prepare for civil services, join professional courses and dream of building successful careers. Their determination proves that the spirit of progress is stronger than the fear created by terrorism.

The economic impact of terrorism has also been severe. Kashmir’s economy depends heavily on tourism, handicrafts, agriculture and small businesses. Whenever violence increases, tourism immediately suffers. Hotels become empty, local markets lose customers and thousands of families dependent on tourism face financial hardship. Kashmiri artisans, famous across the world for carpets, shawls, woodwork and handicrafts, also struggle when instability discourages trade and travel. For many people in the Valley, peace is directly connected to employment, economic growth and a dignified life. A peaceful Kashmir means more tourists, better businesses, stronger education and greater opportunities for the younger generation.

Cross-border terrorism supported from across the border has repeatedly attempted to disturb peace and stability in Jammu & Kashmir. Terror groups have targeted civilians as well as security personnel in attempts to spread fear and instability. Such acts not only threaten national security but also damage the social and economic progress of the region. Terrorism tries to divide communities, weaken public confidence and create an atmosphere of uncertainty. However, despite these repeated attempts, the people of Kashmir have continuously shown courage and resilience in the face of adversity.

The role of India’s security forces in protecting peace and stability in Jammu & Kashmir has been extremely significant. Thousands of brave soldiers, police personnel and members of security agencies have sacrificed their lives while fighting terrorism and safeguarding innocent civilians. The courage displayed by the Indian Army, Central Armed Police Forces, and Jammu & Kashmir Police reflects the nation’s commitment to protecting unity and peace. Alongside them, countless civilians have also lost their lives to terrorism. Their sacrifices remind us that terrorism attacks not only individuals but also humanity, democracy and the collective dream of peaceful coexistence.

At the same time, the story of Kashmir is not only a story of suffering; it is equally a story of hope and resilience. In recent years, the Valley has witnessed positive changes in areas such as tourism, infrastructure, education, entrepreneurship, and sports. Young people are increasingly focusing on innovation, technology, startups, and professional careers. Many Kashmiri youth are using social media and digital platforms to showcase the true cultural beauty of the region rather than allowing terrorism to define its identity. Tourists from different parts of India are once again visiting Kashmir in large numbers, contributing to economic growth and strengthening emotional connections between the Valley and the rest of the country.

The younger generation of Kashmir wants peace, stability and opportunity. They want schools to remain open, businesses to flourish, tourists to return and families to live without fear. Most importantly, they want to be known for their talent, education, hospitality and culture rather than for conflict. This aspiration itself represents the strongest answer to terrorism. Violence may create fear temporarily but it can never defeat the human desire for peace and progress.

Educational institutions, families, media organizations and community leaders all have an important role to play in preventing extremism and promoting harmony. Schools and colleges must encourage values such as tolerance, compassion, national unity and critical thinking. Media platforms should highlight stories of progress, resilience and development rather than glorifying violence. Society as a whole must reject every form of extremism that spreads hatred and division. The fight against terrorism is not only a security challenge; it is also a social and moral responsibility shared by every citizen.

On Anti-Terrorism Day, it is important to remember that terrorism has brought immense pain to Jammu & Kashmir as well as to the nation as a whole. But it is equally important to remember that terrorism has failed to break the spirit of the people. The courage shown by civilians, students, teachers, entrepreneurs and security personnel demonstrates that hope is stronger than fear. Kashmir’s future does not belong to violence; it belongs to peace, development, education, tourism and prosperity.

The true success against terrorism will not be measured only by security achievements but by the day when every child in Kashmir can study without fear, every family can live peacefully and every young person can dream freely about the future. Kashmir deserves to be known for its beauty, culture, hospitality and human warmth — not for the shadow of terrorism that has troubled the region for far too long.

On this Anti-Terrorism Day, the message for the nation is clear: terrorism can spread destruction and fear but it can never defeat unity, resilience and the collective determination of people who believe in peace. Jammu & Kashmir stands today not only as a symbol of suffering caused by terrorism but also as a symbol of courage, hope and the unwavering spirit of India.
